Final step (optional)

One thing I like to do that not only protects the shell from dust, curious fingers, and from additional scratches, as well as give an even deeper and brighter shine, is to apply a coat of Brillianize plastic polish once the decals are installed.

Another alternative is to use Future Floor Polish.  Future is widely available and comes in clear acrylic liquid form for easy application.  Prop up your helmet on the spray paint can again (or other stand/prop), soak a paper towel in Future, and wipe the towel across the helmet.  Future is self-leveling and dries in less than one hour.  Some NFL teams actually use Future on their helmets to keep up that great shine, so there's no better way to top off your authentic game helmet than doing what the pros do!  If you need to remove the Future, use a mixture of ammonia and water (read the label on the Future bottle for exact mixing ratios and directions) to strip it off the helmet. OR, you could use a PreVal sprayer or airbrush to spray the Future coating on the helmet.

Reinstalling pads and liners

Before you reinstall those pads and liners, you might want to clean them first!  Unless the helmet is brand new, those pads are probably not the cleanest in the world.  So, I use an old toothbrush and handcleaner; yes, handcleaner!  My favorite two are GoJo and Fast Orange, but feel free to use your favorite or whatever is available.  Handcleaner cuts through the dirt, grime, and other residues on the pads/liners, and also do a good job of restoring some of the original luster to the surface (depending upon use or abuse, that is...).  You could also use a Brillo or SOS pad to clean the pads and liners.  Once cleaned, wash thoroughly in water and allow to dry before reinstalling into the helmet.  Install the cheekpads, facemask, chinstrap, and other accessories as you require.
